Model Local Rule E-3

Preferred lies

Also searched as: winter rules, lift clean and place, placing the ball

Only allowed when the Committee puts it into effect as a Local Rule. You may then lift your ball on closely mown areas, clean it and place it within a set area.

Once placed, the ball is in play. If it moves after that, the normal rules for a ball that moved apply.

Step by step

  1. 1Check whether the Local Rule applies. Usually shown on the notice board or the scorecard, often in winter or after heavy rain.
  2. 2Mark the spot. Before lifting, mark the spot of the ball.
  3. 3Lift and clean. You may clean the ball fully.
  4. 4Place it. Within the allowed area, not nearer the hole and in the general area. The Committee sets the size, often one club-length or one scorecard length.
