Rule 14.3 · Video, 42 seconds

Ball rolls away after the drop: what now?

Your ball lands in a red penalty area. You decide to take lateral relief for one penalty stroke: you drop within two club-lengths of the crossing point, the spot where your ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area. No nearer the hole and not in the same penalty area (Rule 17.1d).

Land and stay in it

The ball must land in the relief area and come to rest in it (Rules 14.3b and 14.3c). If it rolls out, whether back into the penalty area, into the part that is nearer the hole, or to the side, you drop again.

Drop twice, then place

If the ball rolls out on the second drop as well, there is no third drop. You place it on the spot where it first touched the ground on the second drop (Rule 14.3c). If it does not stay there, you place it there once more. If it rolls away again, you place it on the nearest spot where it will stay at rest, no nearer the hole (Rule 14.2e).
