Golf term

Birdie

Also searched as: one under par, birdie putt, birdie chance

A score of one stroke under par, for example three strokes on a par 4.

The term comes from the USA around 1900. ‘Bird’ was slang for something excellent, and an excellent shot became a birdie.

Together with eagle and albatross it forms the bird family of scores under par: the rarer the score, the bigger the bird.
