Golf term

Bogey

Also searched as: one over par, double bogey, triple bogey, bogey golfer

A score of one stroke over par, for example five strokes on a par 4. Two over is a double bogey, three over a triple bogey.

A bogey golfer averages a bogey on every hole. On a par-72 course that is around 90 strokes, roughly a Handicap Index of 18 to 20.

The word has a curious history: in Britain ‘bogey’ originally meant the expected score for a hole. Only when par took over that meaning did bogey move one stroke up.
