How are handicap strokes allocated to the holes?

On a course you receive 20 handicap strokes. How are they spread over the 18 holes?

Answer

One stroke on every hole, two each on the two hardest holes

Handicap strokes are allocated starting with the hardest hole. With 18 strokes you get one on every hole, and the two extra go to the two hardest holes. How hard each hole is appears on the scorecard in the ‘Hcp’ or stroke index column.
