Cart path relief: can I choose which side?
Your ball lies on a cart path. The nearest point of complete relief is in thick rough on the left. On the right there is nice fairway, but further away. Where may you go?
Answer
To the left, the nearest point counts even if the lie is worse
For free relief only the nearest point where the path no longer interferes counts, not nearer the hole. How good the lie is there does not matter. You may not choose the side.
