Played from a penalty area out of bounds: what are my options?
Your tee shot is in a red penalty area. You play it from there and it goes out of bounds. You do not want to drop in the penalty area again. What may you do?
Answer
Take relief outside the penalty area straight away, for a total of two penalty strokes
You may take stroke-and-distance relief by dropping in the penalty area and then play your 4th stroke. But you may also take relief under Rule 17 outside it straight away: back on the line, lateral relief or from the teeing area. You then get two penalty strokes, one for stroke and distance and one for the penalty area, and play your 5th stroke.
