Match play: hit out of bounds from in front of the tee-markers. May I tee it up again?

In match play you tee your ball 20 centimetres in front of the line between the tee-markers and hit it out of bounds. May you tee the ball again for your next stroke?

Answer

Only if your opponent cancels the stroke. If they let it stand, you drop where you played from

In match play there is no penalty for playing from outside the teeing area, but your opponent may promptly cancel the stroke. Then you play again from inside the teeing area without penalty and may tee the ball. If they let the stroke stand, which is likely with your ball out of bounds, it counts: you take stroke-and-distance relief for one penalty stroke, and because you did not play from the teeing area, you drop within one club-length of the spot you played from.
