Estimated the crossing point wrongly: must I correct it?
Your ball has disappeared into the reeds of a red penalty area. With your group you estimate where it last crossed the edge and take lateral relief. Before you make a stroke, another player finds your ball: it crossed the edge 20 metres farther forward. What is the ruling?
Answer
You must correct the mistake without penalty and take relief from the correct point
A reasonable estimate is accepted even if it later turns out to be wrong. That only applies once you have made the stroke. If the mistake becomes known before then, you must correct it and may use any relief option under Rule 17.
