Ball against a boundary fence: can I strike the fence?

Your ball lies in the general area right against the fence that defines out of bounds. You stand out of bounds and strike the fence from there so that the ball bounces away. What is the ruling?

Answer

That is allowed, it counts as fairly striking the ball

In making a stroke the clubhead does not have to touch the ball directly, something may be in between, such as the fence. Standing out of bounds to play a ball on the course is also allowed. But you must not move or bend the fence itself to make the stroke easier.
