Rules question · Rule 3.2d · Expert

Can I let my opponent’s breach go in match play?

In match play, your opponent honestly tells you that they touched the sand in a bunker on their backswing. On your own, you decide not to act on the penalty and tell them so. What is the ruling?

Answer

That is allowed, and the hole continues without penalty

In match play, you decide for yourself whether to act on your opponent’s breach. After the next stroke you can no longer change that decision. You are only disqualified if you agree together to ignore a penalty you know applies, for example because they talk you into it.
