Played a second ball: what must I do afterwards?

In stroke play you are unsure how to proceed. So you play a second ball under Rule 20.1c(3) and announce in advance which ball you want to count. You complete the hole with both balls. What must you still do?

Answer

Report the facts to the Committee before returning your scorecard, or you are disqualified

In stroke play you may play a second ball when you are unsure what to do. Even if you announced which ball should count, the Committee decides: your chosen ball counts only if the Rules allow the procedure you used with it. If you do not report the facts before returning your scorecard, you are disqualified, even if both balls give the same score.
