Rules question · Rule 19.2 · Hard

Declared my ball unplayable, then found it was in ground under repair: what now?

You lift your ball to take unplayable ball relief. As you do so, you notice that it was in ground under repair marked by a white line. You have not dropped yet. What is the ruling?

Answer

You may take free relief from the ground under repair instead

As long as you have not yet put a ball in play to take unplayable ball relief, you may change your mind. Because the ball was in ground under repair, you are entitled to free relief. Lifting it was allowed because you were taking relief under a Rule.
