Rules question · Rule 8.1a · Medium

Can I replace a divot in front of my ball?

Right in front of your ball on the fairway there is a divot hole, exactly on your line of play. You put a loose divot into it and tread it down. What is the ruling?

Answer

Two penalty strokes

Replacing divots is normally good course care. But if it improves your lie, stance, swing or line of play, it is two penalty strokes. Taking it out again does not help: if you alter the surface of the ground, you cannot avoid the penalty by restoring it. After your stroke you may of course fill the divot hole.
