Dropped from shoulder height and played: what is the penalty?

Out of old habit you drop from shoulder height. The ball comes to rest in the relief area and you play it. What is the ruling?

Answer

One penalty stroke

Since 2019 you drop from knee height. If you drop in a wrong way and play the ball even though it is in the relief area, you get one penalty stroke. If it is outside and you play it, it is two penalty strokes. If you notice the mistake before your stroke, simply drop again without penalty.
