Gave the wrong number of strokes in match play: what happens?

In match play your opponent asks how many strokes you have taken. You mistakenly say ‘four’, but it was five. Your opponent then plays safe before you notice the mistake. What is the ruling?

Answer

You lose the hole

If your opponent asks how many strokes you have taken, you must give the right number. If you do not correct a wrong number before your opponent makes another stroke, you lose the hole, even if it was a mistake.
