Gave a wrong score after the hole: do I lose the hole?

In match play, your opponent takes seven strokes on a hole. After the hole you say that you took five, but it was six. You remember on the next teeing area. What is the ruling?

Answer

No penalty, because you won the hole either way

A wrong number of strokes given after the hole only costs you the hole if it affects your opponent’s understanding of whether the hole was won, lost or tied. Five or six: against seven you won. If the right number would have meant a tied hole, you would lose the hole.
