May you press down grass or flatten an uneven spot in the teeing area before teeing your ball?

Yes, you may alter the surface of the teeing area like that
The teeing area is an exception to the ban on improving the conditions affecting your stroke: you may press down grass, flatten uneven spots and remove dew, frost or water. This applies only in the teeing area of the hole you are playing. Anywhere else the same actions cost the general penalty.
