Rules question · Rule 4.3a · Hard

Can I use a rangefinder when taking relief?

Your ball is in a yellow penalty area. You take back-on-the-line relief with one penalty stroke and want to go back far enough to be exactly 80 metres from the flagstick. There is no Local Rule about distance-measuring devices. May you use your rangefinder to find the spot before you drop?

Answer

Yes, measuring distance is allowed while taking relief too

Measuring distance is allowed throughout the round unless a Local Rule prohibits it, so you may also do it before a drop. How far back on the line you go is your choice, and the rangefinder helps you find your favourite distance. The only thing you may not do is measure elevation changes.
