Rules question · Rule 1.3c · Hard

A spectator improves my lie and I say nothing: is there a penalty?

A spectator finds your ball in long grass. You see them about to press down the grass around the ball, and you say nothing. What is the ruling?

Answer

Two penalty strokes for you, because you did not stop them

You also get the penalty for another person’s actions if they act at your request, or if you see that they are about to breach a Rule and do nothing to stop it. Here, pressing down the grass improves your lie. Had you tried to stop them, there would be no penalty.
