Stroke and distance from the putting green: drop or place?

Your putt is too strong and rolls off the putting green into a penalty area. You take stroke-and-distance relief. How do you put a ball in play?

Answer

Place it on the spot you putted from

If your previous stroke was made from the putting green, you place a ball on the spot where you played it. You only drop when the previous stroke was made from the general area, a bunker or a penalty area. From the teeing area you may tee the ball again.
